Course Description

Overview

Pathology and laboratory medicine form the diagnostic core of modern healthcare, investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms of disease to inform patient diagnosis and treatment. Studying the BBiomedSc (Hons) Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The University of Western Australia provides students with a scientific understanding of disease processes, diagnostic technologies, and clinical laboratory operations. The curriculum integrates theoretical coursework with practical laboratory training, giving learners direct experience with diagnostic instruments, tissue analysis, and disease biomarkers. Studies cover major diagnostic disciplines, including histopathology, clinical biochemistry, hematology, and molecular pathology. This degree suits detail-oriented individuals interested in disease diagnosis, medical science, and laboratory research. Graduates complete the program prepared to contribute to clinical diagnostic laboratories, medical research facilities, and healthcare biotechnology industries.

What You'll Learn

General pathology principles, cellular responses to injury, and disease mechanisms

Histopathology techniques, tissue processing, and microscopic disease identification

Clinical biochemistry, metabolic disorders, and biomarker analysis

Hematology, blood transfusion science, and cellular blood disorders

Molecular pathology, diagnostic genomics, and nucleic acid testing methodologies

Laboratory quality control, diagnostic assay validation, and ethical clinical practice

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, graduates demonstrate an understanding of pathological processes, disease etiology, and diagnostic testing principles across cellular, tissue, and systemic levels. Students build the capacity to critically evaluate diagnostic test results, analyze laboratory data, and correlate pathological findings with clinical conditions. Practical laboratory training equips learners with hands-on capabilities in specimen processing, diagnostic staining, automated analyzer operation, and quality assurance protocols. Consequently, graduates acquire the specialized expertise required to specialize in professional roles such as medical laboratory scientist, diagnostic research assistant, pathology associate, or clinical trial laboratory coordinator.
