Course Description

Overview

Modern society depends on digital infrastructure, and that dependence creates openings for attackers that organisations must learn to close. The Bachelor of Cyber Security majoring in Technology at Adelaide University builds deep technical knowledge in network security, cryptography, ethical hacking and the practical defence of digital systems. Students learn to design, implement and strengthen the security posture of organisations and their users, while also considering the ethical, legal and human factors that surround the use of technology. The program begins with foundational study in IT systems, structured data and networking before moving into advanced topics such as offensive security, security operations and incident response. Hands-on activities, industry-led projects and real-world scenarios taught by experienced IT professionals help students identify, analyse and respond to cyber threats. The degree is provisionally accredited by the Australian Computer Society at cyber security professional level. It suits technically minded students who want to defend systems and data with integrity, and it prepares them for a range of specialist roles in a rapidly evolving field.

They will be able to apply cryptography, network security controls and monitoring techniques to protect information, and to analyse threats, vulnerabilities and risks in a structured way. Training in offensive security and ethical hacking allows them to test defences proactively, and incident response skills prepare them to contain and recover from attacks. Students will be able to evaluate the legal, ethical, privacy and human dimensions of security decisions, and to communicate technical issues clearly to colleagues and non-technical stakeholders. Practical projects and capstone or internship work develop teamwork, project management and presentation skills in realistic professional settings. Through electives and an emphasis on emerging developments, students can keep broadening their expertise. Graduates finish prepared for roles such as cyber security analyst, information security officer, network security engineer or consultant.
