Course Description

Overview

Medical laboratory scientists play a critical role in modern healthcare, conducting diagnostic tests on biological samples to assist physicians in identifying diseases, evaluating treatments, and monitoring patient health. The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science at Griffith University provides a comprehensive education in biomedical science and clinical diagnostic testing. Students learn within advanced laboratories and teaching facilities, gaining hands-on experience across the core disciplines of pathology. The curriculum covers foundational biological and chemical sciences before advancing into specialized study areas including haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, histopathology, transfusion science, and molecular diagnostics. Supported by experienced researchers and clinical professionals, learners undertake extensive work-integrated learning, culminating in substantial professional clinical placements in their final year. Designed for detail-oriented, analytical individuals committed to patient care and medical advancement, this program holds unique international accreditation, opening doors to global career pathways. Graduates emerge with the technical proficiency, professional credentials, and practical readiness required to excel in hospital laboratories, private pathology practices, and research institutions.

What You'll Learn

• Human anatomy, cell biology, physiology, and biochemical principles of health and disease

• Clinical biochemistry, metabolic pathways, and automated diagnostic assay analysis

• Haematology, blood cell morphology, haemostasis, and coagulation disorder testing

• Microbiology, bacteriology, virology, mycology, and infectious disease identification

• Histopathology tissue processing, microscopy, and cytopathology diagnostic methods

• Blood transfusion science, immunology, blood grouping, and compatibility testing

• Molecular diagnosis, nucleic acid testing, quality management, and laboratory governance frameworks

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the programme, students will be capable of performing complex diagnostic assays on human biological samples with precision and adherence to strict quality control standards. Graduates will demonstrate a robust understanding of disease pathophysiology, enabling them to evaluate laboratory test results and provide reliable diagnostic data to medical practitioners. Through extensive practical laboratory training and significant clinical placements, learners cultivate hands-on competence in operating sophisticated laboratory instrumentation, managing specimen workflows, and ensuring patient safety. They will critically appraise clinical research data, maintain regulatory compliance, and adhere to professional codes of ethics in healthcare environments. Ultimately, graduates acquire the analytical rigor, technical expertise, and professional recognition from bodies such as the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists required to secure employment as professional medical scientists globally.
