Course Description

Overview

Paramedics are key frontline healthcare responders, providing urgent medical assessment, critical care interventions, and emergency transport across complex out-of-hospital environments. The Bachelor of Paramedicine at Griffith University delivers a rigorous clinical education designed to develop high-level critical thinking, dynamic decision-making, and diagnostic reasoning. Students train within advanced clinical simulation laboratories and immersive training environments that replicate emergency response scenarios. The curriculum integrates core medical sciences—such as human anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology—with specialized pre-hospital management of trauma, cardiac emergencies, respiratory conditions, and mental health crises. Emphasizing real-world operational readiness, learners complete extensive work-integrated clinical placements with ambulance services as well as non-ambulance healthcare facilities across their degree. Designed for calm, resilient, and compassionate individuals who thrive in fast-paced situations, this course prepares students to deliver life-saving patient care. Graduates emerge eligible to apply for registration as paramedics with Ahpra, equipped to pursue dynamic health careers nationally and globally.

What You'll Learn

• Human anatomy, integrated physiological systems, and pathophysiological responses to trauma and acute illness

• Clinical assessment, triage procedures, diagnostic reasoning, and rapid patient care planning

• Advanced paramedic procedures, airway management, fluid resuscitation, and emergency intervention techniques

• Pre-hospital management of cardiovascular, respiratory, toxicological, and neurological emergencies

• Pre-hospital trauma management, environmental exposure treatment, and maternal and neonatal care

• Major incident response management, disaster mitigation, and interprofessional emergency coordination

• Legal principles, professional ethics, therapeutic communication, and community paramedicine frameworks

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the programme, students will be capable of rapidly evaluating critical clinical scenarios, performing accurate differential diagnoses, and executing evidence-based emergency interventions in out-of-hospital settings. Graduates will demonstrate high-level technical skill in operating advanced emergency medical equipment, administering complex pharmacological agents, and managing severe trauma patients safely. Through extensive ambulance and clinical facility placements, learners build strong operational resilience, situational awareness, and collaborative teamwork skills under high-pressure conditions. They will critically appraise emergency health research, comply strictly with legal and ethical practice guidelines, and deliver culturally safe care to diverse populations. Ultimately, graduates satisfy the professional requirements to register with the Paramedicine Board of Australia through Ahpra and succeed in ambulance service organizations, urgent care environments, and international emergency care roles.
