Course Description

Overview

Physiotherapists assess, diagnose, and treat movement disorders across the human lifespan, empowering individuals to recover from injury, manage chronic illness, and optimize physical performance. The Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) at La Trobe University delivers an extensive, practice-led education that integrates foundational biological sciences with advanced clinical physiotherapy skills. Taught within world-class health facilities, including advanced biomechanics laboratories, specialized simulation suites, and modern movement training environments, the program embeds hands-on practical learning from the outset. The curriculum progresses from core anatomy, human physiology, pathology, and movement biomechanics to specialized clinical streams across musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiorespiratory, pediatric, and sports physiotherapy. Emphasizing extensive real-world clinical experience, students complete 960 hours of supervised professional practice across six 160-hour placements in public hospitals, private clinics, rehabilitation centers, and sports organizations. Designed for compassionate, analytical problem-solvers, this four-year integrated honors program incorporates an individual or industry-aligned research project in the final year. Graduates emerge with the technical skill, clinical confidence, and professional accreditation required to register as physiotherapists and deliver high-quality healthcare globally.

What You'll Learn

• Comprehensive human anatomy, musculoskeletal mechanics, neuroanatomy, and exercise physiology

• Cardiorespiratory assessment, acute hospital care protocols, and airway clearance techniques

• Musculoskeletal physiotherapy evaluation, joint mobilization, exercise prescription, and rehabilitation design

• Neurological assessment and therapeutic management for stroke, spinal cord injury, and neurodegenerative conditions

• Pediatric physiotherapy development, lifespan movement, and specialized geriatric rehabilitation principles

• Sports injury management, performance optimization, biomechanical gait analysis, and physical activity promotion

• Clinical reasoning frameworks, evidence-based research methodologies, biostatistics, and honors research execution

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the programme, students will be capable of applying complex bioscience and clinical knowledge to conduct comprehensive physical assessments, formulate evidence-based diagnoses, and execute personalized intervention plans. Graduates will demonstrate high-level technical proficiency in delivering manual therapy, exercise prescription, electrotherapy, and movement re-education across diverse clinical settings. Through extensive supervised professional placements and simulation practice across urban and regional health networks, learners cultivate advanced clinical decision-making, empathetic patient communication, and interprofessional collaborative capabilities. They will critically appraise clinical research literature, adhere strictly to legal, ethical, and safety governance frameworks, and provide culturally responsive healthcare. Ultimately, graduates satisfy the academic and professional accreditation standards set by the Australian Physiotherapy Council, qualifying them to apply for registration as physiotherapists with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia via Ahpra and practice across public hospitals, private sports clinics, community health centers, and research institutions internationally.
