Course Description

Overview

Marine environments are vital to sustaining global biodiversity, regulating climate, and supporting coastal ecosystems and economies. Studying the BSc (Hons) Marine Biology at Murdoch University provides students with a deep scientific grounding in the biology, ecology, and conservation of ocean organisms. The curriculum pairs rigorous theoretical learning with extensive field-based research and laboratory experimentation, giving students direct access to coastal marine ecosystems and modern analytical facilities. Studies explore everything from marine flora and fauna to oceanography, ecological survey methods, and marine conservation strategies. This course suits curious, nature-focused individuals passionate about preserving aquatic life and managing marine natural resources sustainably. Graduates emerge equipped to lead environmental monitoring, contribute to ecological research, and support sustainable management in ocean-related sectors.

What You'll Learn

Biodiversity and physiology of marine organisms, invertebrates, and fish species

Marine ecology, coastal ecosystems, and coral reef biology

Oceanography, physical ocean processes, and marine chemical dynamics

Ecological survey methodologies, field sampling, and marine data analysis

Conservation biology, habitat restoration, and marine protected area management

Aquatic health, environmental impact assessment, and fisheries management principles

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, graduates demonstrate a thorough understanding of marine biological processes, oceanographic dynamics, and ecological interactions across micro-habitats and global ocean systems. Students acquire the ability to critically evaluate ecological data, assess environmental threats such as climate change and pollution, and formulate evidence-based conservation strategies. Practical field studies and laboratory coursework build hands-on skills in biodiversity sampling, species identification, water quality testing, and spatial analysis. Consequently, learners gain the specialized technical expertise needed to pursue professional roles in marine research, environmental consulting, coastal management, or wildlife conservation agencies.
