Overview

Effective communication and safe swallowing abilities are fundamental to human connection, social engagement, and overall health across all stages of life. The Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours) at Adelaide University prepares future clinicians to diagnose, treat, and support individuals experiencing diverse speech, language, voice, and swallowing difficulties. Students build a comprehensive foundation in human anatomy, physiology, and public health, while learning to work respectfully alongside culturally and linguistically diverse communities, including First Nations populations. Taught by active researchers and experienced health professionals, the curriculum blends theoretical coursework with problem-based learning and hands-on clinical simulations. A central feature of the degree is the completion of over 800 hours of supervised clinical placements across diverse settings, alongside a dedicated final-year honours project in either a research or industry track. This program suits empathetic, detail-oriented individuals committed to improving clinical outcomes and advocating for client wellbeing. Graduates emerge ready to deliver high-quality, evidence-informed care and make a transformative impact within the global health sector.

Students develop the critical capacity to evaluate empirical evidence and synthesize clinical findings to formulate individualized assessment and intervention plans for complex speech, language, voice, and swallowing conditions. Through extensive hands-on experience in clinical placements and practical workshops, learners master essential therapeutic techniques, diagnostic protocols, and client-centred communication strategies required for real-world healthcare settings. Furthermore, students cultivate the ability to navigate diverse societal contexts responsibly, embedding First Nations health knowledge and ethical principles into clinical decision-making.
