Course Description

Overview

Speech pathologists play a vital role in healthcare, education, and community settings by assessing, diagnosing, and treating individuals experiencing communication disorders and swallowing difficulties. The Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours) at La Trobe University delivers an extensive, practice-focused education that integrates human communication science, linguistics, acoustics, and neuroanatomy. Taught within specialized health science facilities, including speech simulation suites and state-of-the-art voice and acoustic analysis laboratories, the program embeds practical skill development from the outset. The curriculum progresses from foundational studies in anatomy, physiology, phonetics, and linguistics to advanced clinical management of developmental speech and language delays, acquired neurogenic communication disorders, voice disorders, stuttering, and dysphagia. Emphasizing extensive clinical immersion, students complete supervised professional placements across hospitals, schools, community health centers, and private practices in metropolitan, regional, and rural environments. Designed for empathetic, communicative problem-solvers, this four-year integrated honors program equips graduates with high-level clinical reasoning and research capabilities. Graduates emerge with full professional accreditation readiness, prepared to enhance quality of life and advocate for communication rights across diverse healthcare and community sectors.
