Course Description

Overview

Human nutrition is a pivotal biological science that examines how dietary intake, metabolic processes, and nutrient interactions directly influence health and prevent chronic disease. The BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition at the University of Greenwich provides students with a strong scientific foundation in physiological mechanisms, metabolic pathways, and public health strategy. Accredited by the Association for Nutrition, the program aligns directly with professional standards and is taught by research-active academics with expertise in areas such as gut microbiology, infant development, and obesity management. Instruction combines theoretical lectures with hands-on laboratory exercises, where restricted class sizes foster direct interaction and collaborative problem-solving. As the curriculum advances, students explore specialized domains such as clinical dietary management, nutritional biochemistry, and food safety standards. This degree is ideally suited for analytical individuals who are passionate about the intersection of food science and human biology. Graduates finish the program with the rigorous scientific expertise, evidence-based analytical skills, and professional accreditation pathways needed for successful careers in healthcare, research, and the food sector.

What You'll Learn

Human physiological systems and metabolic biochemical pathways

Nutritional biochemistry, micro- and macronutrient functions, and dietary requirements

Microbiology, gut microbiota, probiotics, and immunology in health

Public health nutrition strategies, health promotion, and epidemiological analysis

Clinical nutrition, metabolic disorders, and dietary intervention design

Food science, food safety regulations, and quality management standards

Research methodologies, ethical data collection, and independent scientific investigation

Learning Outcomes

By the conclusion of the program, students will possess an integrated understanding of nutritional science across multiple scales, ranging from cellular metabolic pathways to population-wide public health interventions. Graduates will be equipped to critically evaluate scientific literature, assess complex dietary data, and apply evidence-based principles to address contemporary health challenges such as obesity, metabolic disease, and nutritional deficiencies. Through hands-on laboratory classes and practical workshops, learners master essential technical skills in biochemical analysis, dietary assessment techniques, and empirical research methods. Furthermore, the opportunity to execute an independent final-year research project allows students to specialize in a dedicated domain, synthesizing complex scientific information into coherent, actionable conclusions. Ultimately, graduates emerge with the analytical precision, scientific rigor, and professional capabilities required to evaluate dietary strategies and communicate complex nutritional evidence across healthcare, industrial, and academic environments.
