Overview
The BSc (Hons) Human Nutrition explores the scientific relationship between food, nutrients, human health and physical performance. At the University of Westminster, the course brings together nutrition, biochemistry, physiology, public health and behavioural science to develop a broad understanding of how dietary factors influence health and disease.
What You'll Learn
- Fundamental principles of human nutrition and the biological processes underlying nutrient use
- Cell biology, human physiology, metabolism and nutritional biochemistry
- The relationship between nutrition, exercise and physical performance
- Public health nutrition and factors influencing dietary behaviour
- Nutritional needs across different stages of the life cycle
- The contribution of diet to the prevention and management of disease
- Nutrition-related aspects of psychology, health behaviours and exercise
- Scientific research methods, data analysis and laboratory techniques
- Evaluation of scientific literature and evidence from research studies
- Applied nutrition, including nutritional strategies relevant to physically active individuals
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to explain the biological and physiological mechanisms connecting nutrition with human health and performance. They will be able to assess nutritional information critically, interpret scientific evidence and apply relevant principles to health, disease and physical activity contexts. Students will also develop the ability to use appropriate research methods, analyse and communicate scientific findings, and evaluate evidence from peer-reviewed literature. The course further enables students to consider nutritional issues from both individual and public health perspectives, while developing professional and scientific skills relevant to further study and practice in human nutrition.
