Overview
The BSc (Hons) Physics with Astrophysics at the University of Bristol combines the study of fundamental physical laws with the exploration of stars, galaxies, and the wider universe. The foundation stage develops the mathematical and scientific principles needed to progress into more advanced areas of physics and astrophysics.
What You'll Learn
Core mathematics for physics, including algebra, calculus, vectors, and mathematical modelling.
Fundamental physics covering mechanics, waves, electricity, magnetism, and thermodynamics.
Laboratory techniques for observing, measuring, investigating, and interpreting physical phenomena.
Classical and modern physics, including concepts that underpin contemporary physical science.
Astrophysics and the physical processes governing stars, galaxies, and other astronomical systems.
The structure, evolution, and properties of astronomical objects and the universe.
Computational methods and data analysis used to investigate physical and astronomical problems.
Experimental design, scientific research, and the interpretation of quantitative evidence.
Scientific communication, problem solving, teamwork, and independent study skills.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical and physical principles to analyze problems across physics and astrophysics. They will understand how physical laws can be used to explain phenomena ranging from fundamental processes to the behavior and evolution of astronomical objects. Students will develop practical skills in carrying out experiments, recording and analyzing measurements, and evaluating the reliability of scientific results. They will also be able to use appropriate computational and analytical methods to investigate quantitative problems and interpret scientific data. The course will enable students to connect theoretical concepts with experimental and observational evidence, assess scientific information critically, and present their reasoning clearly. Through study across physics and astrophysics, students will build a coherent understanding of the physical processes that shape both terrestrial systems and the wider universe.
