Course Description

Overview

Communication and swallowing abilities are fundamental human functions that profoundly impact individual quality of life, health outcomes, and social participation across all lifespan stages. Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) at The University of Sydney explore the scientific foundations and clinical methodologies required to assess and treat speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders. The curriculum integrates core biological, psychological, and linguistic sciences with intensive hands-on clinical training conducted within specialized campus facilities and health clinics. Learners interact directly with active researchers and expert clinicians specializing in areas such as pediatric language development, neurotic communication disorders, and complex dysphagia. Early and sustained clinical placements bridge academic theory with real-world practice, enabling students to deliver person-centered care across diverse community, hospital, and school settings. This program suits empathetic, analytical problem solvers who wish to gain the professional competencies necessary to practice as qualified speech pathologists.
