Course Description

Overview

Coastal and marine ecosystems are vital to global climate regulation, biodiversity preservation, and economic sustainability, yet they face unprecedented environmental pressures. Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Marine Biology - Coastal and Marine Science) at The University of Sydney explore the physical, biological, and ecological processes that govern oceanic and coastal environments. The curriculum combines rigorous foundational science in biological and earth systems with specialized study in marine ecology, oceanography, and coastal management. Learners benefit from direct engagement with leading marine scientists and researchers, utilizing contemporary laboratory facilities and specialized research field stations—including One Tree Island Research Station on the Great Barrier Reef. Integrated field research and hands-on laboratory exercises bridge theoretical concepts with real-world conservation and coastal management practices. This program suits environmentally conscious, analytical problem solvers who wish to safeguard marine ecosystems and advance coastal scientific research.

What You'll Learn

Marine biology principles, biodiversity, and the functional adaptations of marine organisms

Coastal morphology, physical oceanography, wave dynamics, and sediment transport systems

Marine ecology, coral reef ecosystem dynamics, and marine population dynamics

Chemical oceanography, marine bio geochemistry, and ocean acidification mechanics

Marine conservation strategies, ecosystem restoration, and protected area management

GIS applications, spatial analysis, and remote sensing in marine and coastal mapping

Experimental design, biostatistics, environmental data modeling, and field sampling techniques

Coastal management policy, environmental impact assessment, and resource governance

Professional scientific practice, field research expeditions, and collaborative research capstone projects

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will acquire an advanced understanding of marine organisms, oceanographic processes, and coastal landscape dynamics across diverse aquatic environments. They will possess the capacity to critically analyze environmental data, evaluate human impacts on marine ecosystems, and formulate evidence-based solutions for coastal protection and marine resource management. Through extensive field research, laboratory analysis, and spatial mapping projects, students build strong practical competence in ecological surveying, oceanographic data collection, and scientific report writing. Furthermore, the specialized interdisciplinary framework equips individuals with the scientific rigor and field experience necessary to pursue impactful careers across environmental consultancies, marine research institutes, government conservation agencies, and resource management organizations globally.
